Messolonghi (or Missolonghi) is a unique city with the largest lagoon in Greece. It is divided by the Gulf of Patra and the rivers of Evinos and Acheloos. The lagoon extends at a length of 27.3 km and is an important ecosystem that sustains the life of birds, fish and the people living around it. In ancient times, the lagoon was a natural stronghold that protected its people against intrusion. The swampy soils and marshes prevented easy access of any colonizing seafaring vessels. Around the 17th and 18th centuries, Messolonghi became an important commercial port with a seafaring fleet that showed great prosperity. Pigkos is one of the oldest merchant vessels that was mainly used in Messolonghi, it weighed over 82 tons and could carry more than 15 people. Additionally, the Fregata was a heavy cruiser that belonged to the sailors of Kefalonia and Messolonghi that crossed the Ionian and Adriatic Sea. The vessel carried about 30-40 cannons with an average capacity of 72 tons. With such large merchant vessels, Messolonghi developed to be a prominent commercial and maritime center. Today, visitors can take a walk in the Garden of Heroes at the entrance of the city, dedicated to the memory of the fighters during The Exodus of Messolnghi (where they tried to gain freedom from the Ottomans). Tucked away from this lovely monument, one can head for a secluded retreat to Greece’s best-kept secrets by sailing Messolnghi on a catamaran, sailboat, or motor yacht of their choice.

Approaching the Gulf of Patra you can make stops at the seaside towns of Akrata and Aigio which are at the foothills of the mountains Helmos and Panachaikon. Right opposite, you can stop by Galaxidi, also a popular starting point for any Ionian sailing charter.
