Euboea is the second-largest island in Greece, its central region is connected to the mainland by Chalkida’s bridge. The city is ideal for a day trip, not only because it offers numerous bars and restaurants but also because it is blessed with history. The temple of Artemis in Aulis is an archaeological site you can visit. According to mythology, the daughter of King Agamemnon was sacrificed here in order for Greek ships to reach Troy through more desirable winds. You can also visit the Karababa fortress where you will have panoramic views of the Aegean or even the Archaeological Museum to better understand the entire history of Euboea.

One thing that stands out in Chalkida among its enduring buildings is its tides. The sea currents in the Evripus Channel continue to change direction every six hours and form whirlpools according to the phases of the moon. This narrow strait that separates Chalkida from mainland Greece made even the most popular scientists including Euripides, Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates question the irregularity of the tides. Besides that, and visiting remarkable and important sights, you can dedicate a special day by renting a boat in northern Euboea and exploring the coast.

Away from the narrow strait and unusual sea tide, there are several beaches you can explore by renting a boat in Euboea. You have the option to cruise towards the North Eueboan Gulf and explore Lihadonisia. On your way to the majestic island cluster of Lihadonisia, you can make stops at some beautiful beaches. From Chalkida, you can also enjoy a day trip to Eretria situated on the south Euboean Gulf. Eretria is a popular holiday destination just 24 km south of the capital. Along the coast, you will find lots of places offering fresh seafood and traditional recipes. Apart from unwinding and relaxing at the seaside of the settlement, you can stop to learn about the history of Euboea in the Tomb of Eros or the Archaeological Museum. Some beautiful areas around Eretria to explore by catamaran or sailboat, are Magoula or Amarynthos. Around the southern bay, the island of dreams which translates from ‘Nisi ton Oneiron’ has turquoise waters and excellent sceneries. Lots of boats from Skala Oropou right opposite spend their day here for swimming, kitesurfing and watersport activities. From Chalkida, you can enjoy a week’s cruise with a sailboat. Megalonisos and Chersonisi are part of the Petalioi complex and are known for their exotic waters that will remind you of the Caribbean.
