Salamina or Salamis is the largest island in the Saronic Gulf, just 1 nautical mile away from the harbor of Piraeus in Athens. Thanks to its proximity to Athens, you can easily rent a boat and enjoy the perfect weekend trip. Here you will find some impressive sights, ancient monuments, and wonderful beaches that are covered with luxuriant vegetation. According to mythology, Salamina took its name from the daughter of the river god Asopos, with whom Poseidon fell in love and gave birth to the island’s first king. Salamina is best-known for the glorious battle that took place between Greek and Persian fleets in the year 480 BC. The naval victory of the alliance of the Greek states marked a tremendous day in history. Faneromeni Monastery is a well-known church on the island that displays several frescoes. Agios Nikolaos Kalyivitis and Agios Dimitrios are also churches you can visit with great hagiographies.

The capital of the island is Koulouri which extends to the coast of Karaiskakis, it will remind you of an exotic landscape. From lounge bars to ouzeries and clubs, there are a lot of options to enjoy the nightlife here. You can also visit a Folklore Museum which features local costumes, tools, paintings, and ship models. The taverns all over Salamina are known for pleasing local expectations, particularly in the seaside villages of Aiantio and Selinia.

After checking the highlights of the capital and the villages on the island, you can enjoy a boat charter in Greece and include Salamina in your weekly or daily itinerary.

From Salamina you can enjoy a day trip to Athens or any nearby islands that make up the Saronic Gulf. These include Aegina, Spetses, and Hydra. Paloukia is the harbor of Salamina and is located on the northeast side of the island. It mostly operates ferry boats for daily excursions, so many of our guests prefer it to start a yacht charter from Athens. From Athens, you can explore the southern beaches of Salamina, most often advised by the locals. You can stop by the village of Ampelakia, which features some ruins of the ancient acropolis of Salamis. You can also go for a dip to Psili Ammos, packed with families thanks to its shallow waters. Along the way, you will find the beach cove of Iliakti which offers the perfect natural shade for your yacht. Other favorite beaches include Kanakia, Maroudi, Sateri, and Kolones where you can enjoy swimming in turquoise blue waters and taking in the summer breeze.

Overall, Salamina makes a great stop-off point on a tailored route to the Saronic islands. You can easily navigate out of the Megara Gulf and into the Saronic Gulf where you can discover the hidden gems of Aegina, Poros, Hydra, and Spetses. You also have the option to rent a catamaran or sailboat for a week and visit several interesting places in the Peloponnese. These include Corinth, Epidaurus, Nafplion, Mycenae, and Delfi. However, if you have limited time, however, you can simply hire a motor yacht and enjoy a weekend excursion to Salamina from Athens.

Below you will find some useful information for your boat rentals in Salamina.
