Malta is situated in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, 60 miles off the coast of Sicily and 180 miles north of Libya. The Maltese archipelago is made up of the three main islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino--which are inhabited--and Filfia, Cominotto, and St. Paul--which are smaller uninhabited islands. The Harbour of Valletta is an important hub, dating back to Maltese maritime history, and is one of the most impressive ports in the world, which has continuously brought a large influx of foreign yachts. Birgu, in Malta, is also a historic city with a beautiful waterfront; here, you can visit Fort St. Angelo, which offers excellent panoramic views. The city has also been a center of seafaring activity for almost a millennium. There are many things to do on this small paradisiacal island before you begin your sailing trip with your friends and family.

When you begin your sailing holidays in Malta, you can explore various pristine beaches and bays between Comino and Gozo. Your trips can start from the Harbour of Valletta, the harbor town of  Msida; for an alternative sailing route, you could start from the harbor of Mgarr in Gozo. You cannot miss heading down to the Blue Lagoon in Comino; one of the best beaches in Malta, many referring to the Caribbean waters. A day cruise in Comino will offer you plenty of swimming and snorkeling experiences. The Blue Lagoon of Comino is also situated between Malta and its sister island Gozo which marks a popular trip that many charterers offer on the BednBlue platform. The island of Comino has no roads but plenty of anchorages, such as the Crystal Lagoon, which is only accessible by boat. At the end of the bay, you can also get to see St Mary’s Tower, which was featured in “The Count Of Monte Cristo'' (a spectacular novel that became a classic movie). You can also spend a night at Cominotto which has a calm anchorage and offers several hiking opportunities.

Comino to Gozo is only 20 minutes away, allowing you to tour around the islands without stopping. On your private sailboat, you can pass by St. Paul’s Bay, which has amazing sun-bathing spots and enchanting open-sea views. If you have more time available, Mellieha Bay is another great stop; it offers endless activities such as water-skiing, jet-skiing, and windsurfing since intense underwater currents are almost never experienced there.  Heading to Gozo, you can dock in the Mgarr marina where you will come across unspoiled landscapes, several vineyards, and quiet bays that can only be accessed by a yacht. Your charter experience can be extended for a two-day or three-day cruise. Various bays, including Ramla Bay and the beaches of Xlendi and Slan Blas, will impress you with their crystal-clear waters.

Sailing in Malta will also allow you to discover Sliema, situated in the northeast of the island. St Julian’s bay is packed with bars and restaurants. Further down, you can visit Kantra Beach Club, followed by a great swim in St. Peter’s Pool, known for its blue waters and divine grottos. Marsaxlokk is a  great stop you can add to your charter experience in Malta; you will come across some of the oldest religious temples in the world and brightly colored fishing boats by the beautiful bay of Marsaskala. Finally, a private cruise to the Blue Grotto of Malta on the far west of the island is not to be missed. Snorkeling in the crystal blue sea of Zurieq’s valley within beautiful rock formations will steal your heart away.

A sailboat charter in Malta can be combined with a visit to Sicily and the Aeolian islands. Malta to Sicily can take about 3 hours by sailboat. You will find yourself docking into the ports of Pozzallo and Catania. Alternative sailing journeys from Malta, which can be included in weekly charters, involve traveling to Linosa island and Lampedusa. Linosa and Lampedusa form the Pelagie islands of Sicily and hold many surprises for sailing enthusiasts. The colorful marine life--including sea turtles and dolphins--the shallow waters, and various sheltered bays make it a great cruising ground for many yachts. The islands are ideal for those who want to explore anonymous beaches and escape from the crowds and will guarantee an unforgettable sailing holiday.
