Sifnos is known for its long-lasting gastronomic tradition and is nicknamed the “island of flavors” in the Cyclades. Sifnos was one of the richest places in the ancient world, not only because of its development of ceramic arts but also flourished due to its gold, silver mines, and rich mineral deposits. To the present day, it is an island that is characterized by its authentic Greek cuisine, ceramic pottery, and exceptional architecture. The abundance of raw materials allowed the inhabitants to put their crafts to use and has helped spread the art of pottery all over Greece. Today there are more than 12 pottery workshops, which can be found in the picturesque settlements of Kamares, Faros, Vathi and Platis Gialos. The former capital of Sifnos was Kastro, a fortified castle made with a wall of Sifnian marble that protected its inhabitants in prehistoric times.

Around the island, visitors will also see plenty of fortified towers, in the earlier days they were used as lookout points in case of surprised raids from pirates. Today you will find the beautiful capital known as Apollonia, perched around three steep hills and offering endless walking alleys. That is not all, Sifnos is a popular destination because of its beautiful natural landscape. Whitewashed houses, green olive trees, and numerous beaches blend harmoniously. Sifnos is a relatively small island, compared to other Greek islands, but has plenty of archeological sites to visit and more than 350 monasteries.
