If you want to visit Evia, Karystos is an ideal weekend destination with a remarkable coastline. Karystos is only 1 hour away from Athens by ferry and is known to be the commercial center of the south. Greeks constructed monolithic pillars from Karystos marble, which also widely used during the rule of Julius Ceasar and Augustus, who used it as a building material in paving floors and walls. According to mythology, Karystos took its name from the son of the Centaurs Chiron, who was famous for his knowledge of medicine. One of the highlights of Karystos is below Mt Ochi where the chestnut forest of Kastanologos lies. The entire landscape is dotted with hundreds of chestnut trees that appear to be over 300 years old. In fact, there is evidence that Karystos took its name from here; the word Karya which means Kastana. One of Evia’s archaeological wonders is the Dragon Houses known as Drakospita. On Mt. Ochi, rising above the town of Karystos, you can find these pyramid-shaped houses. That is not all, these enormous limestone constructions were believed to be the ancient sanctuaries of Zeus and Heracles. Mt.Ochi has an impressive height of 1,400 m and overlooks the Aegean Sea. From the mountain to the coast, you can be one of the few guests who rent a boat in Kayrstos and explore the small coves and beaches that are hard to reach.

With your boat trip in Kayrstos, you can explore the whole island from south to north. You can enjoy a day cruise with a motor yacht to an organized or even remote beach of your choice. Along the coastline of Karystia, you can visit several secluded beaches that are enclosed by high cliffs. Potami beach is a popular beach part of the Cavo d’Oro shoreline. The Cavo d’Oro are straights that run between Evia and Andros, although winds can be quite rough, with a catamaran or sailboat you will find very clean beaches that are ideal for snorkeling. As you swim away from the shore the seabed becomes deeper. From Potami Beach (River beach) you can cruise to Kastri, a hamlet situated on the southern part of the coastline. There is a natural harbor here known as Geraistos where you can moor your boat, In ancient years this was a strategic navigational position. Descending towards the east coast you will find Psili Ammos, very suitable for families with children. The sea is protected from the winds and frequented by numerous young people. On your way, you can visit Bouros beach, where other leisure boats offer snorkeling explorations. The entire bay of Karystos is well-protected from the winds and is often a better alternative than visiting Andros from July to August.
