Yachts in Gytheio

Gytheio is located in the center of the Laconian Gulf, where the three “legs” of the Peloponnese meet with the peninsula of Mani. Gythio constitutes the largest settlement in Man,i and it has a busy harbor. Besides the wonderful opportunity to enjoy a yacht tour in Gythio, you can enjoy the tranquil rhythms of the town and its natural beauty.

As it is reported by Homer, the island was the first refuge of Helen and Paris on their journey to Troy. Legends say that Paris forgot his helmet on the islet as he was leaving. The Town Hall of Gythio and the ancient theatre are fantastic monuments to visit. According to mythology, the theatre was built by Hercules and Apollo, who once fought over, then reconciled.  The first thing that will catch your eye in this Greek town is the pastel-colored neoclassical buildings. By the long promenade by the coast, you can stop to taste the local cuisine and gaze at the Taygetos Mountain, which almost reaches the waters of the Laconian Bay.

Once you have strolled around Gytheio, you can begin your yacht tours in Mani by departing from the Port of Gythio. Selinitsa is one of the cleanest beaches in the area, awarded the Blue Flag. You will be able to spot Caretta-Caretta sea turtles and the shipwreck of Dimitrios. 2 Km south of Gythio, you can head to Mavrovouni Beach. The beach has crystal clear waters and is ideal for water sports. The beach extends to about 6 km, which is why booking a motor yacht is a recommended option. Valtaki and Evrotas Beach are also pleasant choices, a little further away.

You can explore the beautiful Greek islands in Messinia on a week's charter. You can make a stop at the Port of Kalamata before you arrive at Koroni and Pylos, for example. Schiza, Sapienza, and Spahcteria are wonderful little islands with plenty of beaches, coves, and anchorages for your sailing trip. Another option is to enjoy a 3-day or 4-day charter to the majestic island of Elafonisos. The island is the way to paradise, with a truly spectacular beach experience.

Below you will find some useful information for your yacht rentals in Gythio.

Gythio Port: The harbor of Gythio provides good protection from the NW prevailing winds.

Visiting yachts can moor along the inside of the eastern breakwater. There is space for about 12 to 15 cruising boats docking Med-style. Do take care using your own anchor here, as the bottom is fouled with all kinds of debris (chains, old anchors, old mooring ropes, etc.).

Cruise ships currently anchor outside the port, and their tenders dock on the same breakwater. This blocks off another 4 to 5 available slots.

Fishing boats tie up further into the harbor and on the western quay, which is not permitted for yachts. About a third of the available space in this port is taken up by derelict boats caught in illegal activities and confiscated by the Greek authorities.

Anchoring is possible on either side of Nisos Kranai and provides protection from northerlies and southerlies, but it can be choppy. The bottom is sand and weed, so try to pick a sandy patch for good holding.

Another useful anchorage is Porto Kayio, about 21 NM south of Gythion at the tip of the east side of the Mani peninsula.

There are ferry routes from Gytheio’s Port to Kythira, Antikythira, and Kissamos in Crete.

The nearest airport to Gythio is Kalama Airport, about 59 km away ( a 2-hour drive).
