Omis is a town settled in Southern Croatia, approximately 15 miles southeast of Split. This enchanting town is bound by the Cetina River in the east and north. It passes through an impressive gorge to the center of a mini-riviera, spreading about 30 kilometers in length. Special boats called “arrows” were used to patrol the waters and quickly retreat to the mouth of the river. While it’s true that today you will not find any fast pirate travel ships, there are plenty of sailboats available that cruise the waters of the Omis Riviera. Omis was once a famous pirate town with excellent seamen who navigated the Adriatic Sea. For over 400 years, the city was protected from these fierce pirates until finally defeated in 1444 by the Turkish invasion. Besides the initial notoriety of being a pirate town, Omis has several sights that all testify to its rich history.

Before your sailing excursions in Omis, you can visit various sights. The Starigrad Fortress was built in the 15th century as a primary defense structure against the Ottoman Empire. You can take spectacular walks from the fortress, which is located on the high peak of the mountain just above the old town. Strolling through the old town, you will also see old stone houses, pretty lanes, the city museum, and some beautiful little churches. The Mirabella Fortress is another sight to behold over the historic old town, with wonderful views of the Cetina Canyon.

Once you have filled your day with the highlights of the city center, you can enjoy a sailing trip from Omis for a completely different experience.

For a day trip, you can enjoy a scenic boat ride through the Cetina River. This excursion runs from the mouth of the river in Omis to the resort known as Radmanove Milnice. Here, you will experience direct contact with nature. This is the most water-rich river in Dalmatia, with numerous fish, coots, wild ducks, and diverse flora and fauna.

By renting a sailboat, you can also enjoy a half-day or full-day trip to Brac. In the northern part of the island, you will find the Blue Lagoon, known for offering guests a top swimming and snorkeling experience. You may also stop and have lunch at a restaurant in the local towns. Other day trip options from Omis may include a cruise along the magnificent beaches of its Riviera. Velika Plaza is the main beach next to Omis city, with crystal-clear waters and gently sloping waves, making it perfect for families with children. The neighboring town of Omis, Duce, has a length of 6 kilometers, with several wonderful bays and sandy beaches. Other beaches along the Riviera are Brzet, Mala Luka, and Vruja Beach, where you can have a nice swim.

Every morning, several tourist sailboats cruise out from Omis towards Hvar and other islands. A sailing trip in Omis can be organized for more than a day.
